Large-scale Automotive plant decommissioning under full project control

One of the most comprehensive industrial decommissioning programmes in recent European automotive history has been successfully executed at the Audi production site in Brussels.

Under full project responsibility, Gerritsen Group dismantled and cleared a major vehicle production facility covering approximately 488,000 m². The project required absolute operational control, strict HSE governance and seamless coordination with Audi’s management on a daily basis.

This was not a dismantling assignment.
It was a transformation at industrial scale.

Scope of the project

Decommissioning a complete 488,000 m² automotive production site

The scope of this multi-phase project includes the full dismantling of key factory sections, such as the paint shop, body shop, and battery assembly lines, along with the removal and repurposing of internal transport systems and material handling equipment. With multiple dedicated crews working simultaneously on-site, we currently load and dispatch a minimum of 10 trucks per day carrying dismantled assets, either destined for resale or redeployment within Audi’s global production network. The project moved dynamically from medium to large to extra-large deployment phases, requiring adaptive manpower planning and disciplined execution.

The execution

SSMI from the Gerritsen Group was appointed to execute the dismantling programme under full project control, with safety, transparency and accountability as non-negotiable principles. Every step was guided by SSMI’s proven work methodology, from asset inventory and scope assessment to secure packaging, transport logistics, and full HSE compliance, ensuring a swift and seamless execution without operational disruptions.

Weekly executive meetings ensured alignment between project leadership and client management. Multiple dedicated crews operated simultaneously on-site. Within approximately twelve months, the entire 488,000 m² facility was dismantled and delivered fully cleared and compliant with all safety, environmental and contractual requirements. Production assets were redistributed across multiple circular channels, ensuring optimal value recovery and minimal waste generation. The site transitioned from fully operational production halls to broom-clean, compliant spaces ready for future redevelopment.
