Warehouse & Logistics Decommissioning

From warehouse closure to the next use of your assets.

Closing or restructuring a warehouse involves more than removing equipment. Storage systems, material handling machinery and supporting installations need to be dismantled, transported and, where possible, prepared for reuse.

Through our industrial decommissioning services, SSMI manages this process from initial planning to final site handover. With warehouse facilities across several European countries, our own logistics fleet and technical project expertise, we have the infrastructure to support every stage.

We also help surplus equipment find its next purpose, recovering value for your organisation while extending the useful life of industrial assets.

Warehouse decommissioning without unnecessary complexity

Warehouse closures, relocations and facility upgrades often involve several interconnected activities. Equipment needs to be disconnected and removed, transport must be coordinated and the building has to be returned in the agreed condition.

When different contractors manage these activities separately, responsibility can become fragmented. SSMI brings the process together. We coordinate technical planning, HSE requirements, dismantling, storage, transport and asset recovery within one project structure.

This gives your team a clear point of contact and reduces the time spent coordinating suppliers. Where warehouse operations need to continue during the project, we incorporate those requirements into the execution plan.

What equipment can be included?

Warehouse and logistics facilities contain a wide range of equipment. Some assets can be redeployed within your organisation, while others may still have commercial value on the used equipment market. Depending on the facility and agreed project scope, we can assess and coordinate the removal of:

  • Conveyor and sorting systems
  • Material handling equipment
  • Automated warehouse installations
  • Storage and racking systems
  • Packaging and palletising equipment
  • Supporting mechanical and electrical installations
  • Surplus machinery and associated production equipment

As with our production line decommissioning projects, the intended destination of each asset is considered during planning. This helps determine how equipment should be dismantled, handled and prepared for transport. This helps determine how equipment should be dismantled, handled and prepared for transport.

Our own European warehousing and logistics capacity

The infrastructure to keep your project moving.  Removing equipment is one part of the process. Getting it to the right destination, at the right time, requires reliable logistics and sufficient storage capacity.

SSMI has access to its own large-scale warehouse facilities in several European countries, supported by our industrial logistics and transport capabilities. This gives us greater control over the movement and handling of equipment throughout a project.

Machinery can be transported to another production site, moved into storage or prepared for its next owner. When the receiving location is not yet ready, our warehousing capacity provides additional flexibility.

For facility owners working towards a fixed handover date, this is particularly valuable. The removal schedule does not always have to depend on the availability of an external buyer or receiving facility. One coordinated process, from dismantling to storage and onward transport.

Recover value from surplus warehouse equipment

A warehouse closure or production change can release equipment that is still suitable for use elsewhere. Through our asset recovery and machinery repurposing approach, SSMI considers the future of these assets before dismantling begins.

Through our industrial projects across different sectors, warehouse and logistics equipment regularly becomes available. Explore a selection of available industrial equipment to discover current opportunities below. This gives us practical experience with surplus machinery and creates opportunities to connect equipment with organisations looking for used industrial assets. Depending on its condition and market demand, equipment may be redeployed internally, sold directly or offered through alternative sales channels.

Our European warehouse facilities and logistics capabilities support this process. Equipment can be removed, stored and prepared for its next destination without unnecessarily delaying the wider decommissioning project. The aim is simple. Recover commercial value where possible and keep useful equipment in operation for longer.

How we manage your warehouse decommissioning project

Every project starts with understanding the facility, the equipment involved and the result you need. Our process follows five stages.

Project Intake

We establish the scope, inventory relevant assets and identify site requirements, deadlines and potential opportunities for equipment redeployment or resale.

Project Planning

We develop an execution plan covering HSE, dismantling methods, operational restrictions, logistics and the intended destination of surplus equipment.

Disassembly

Equipment and agreed supporting installations are dismantled in accordance with the project plan, taking their condition and future use into account.

Storage & Transport

We coordinate packaging, handling and transport. Our European warehousing network provides storage options when equipment cannot move directly to its next destination.

Final Site Transfer

We review the completed work against the agreed requirements before responsibility for the facility or relevant area is transferred back to your organisation.

Want to understand the complete process? Read our Complete Guide to Industrial Decommissioning, covering everything from initial asset inventory to final site handover.

Why work with SSMI?

Technical expertise backed by practical infrastructure. A decommissioning partner should understand what happens before, during and after equipment removal. SSMI combines technical project management with the warehousing, transport and asset recovery capabilities needed to manage the wider process.

Full Project Ownership

One coordinated approach from initial assessment to final site handover.

Dedicated Logistics Capacity

Our transport fleet supports the movement of equipment between facilities, storage locations and buyers.

European Warehousing

Our own storage facilities across several European countries provide flexibility throughout the project.

Asset Recovery

We evaluate opportunities for reuse and resale to help preserve the value of surplus equipment.

 Frequently asked questions

What does warehouse decommissioning involve?

Warehouse decommissioning covers the planned removal of equipment and installations when a warehouse or distribution facility closes, relocates or changes its operations. Depending on the scope, this can include dismantling, packaging, transport, storage, asset recovery and final site handover.

Can SSMI store equipment after dismantling?

Yes. SSMI has access to its own large-scale warehouse facilities in several European countries. This provides storage options when equipment cannot be transported directly to its next destination or when additional time is needed to arrange redeployment or resale.

Can warehouse equipment be sold or reused?

Depending on its condition, configuration and market demand, surplus equipment may be suitable for internal redeployment or external resale. SSMI evaluates these opportunities as part of the project planning process.

Can SSMI arrange international equipment transport?

Yes. Our logistics operations and transport fleet support the movement of industrial equipment between European locations. Specific transport and export requirements are assessed according to the equipment and destination.

Can decommissioning take place while part of the warehouse remains operational?

This depends on the facility and project scope. Where operations need to continue, we consider access restrictions, utilities, working areas and operational requirements when developing the execution plan.
